By Hand Gallery’s May “3AM” Exhibition Will Feature New Cast Iron Sculptures

By Hand Gallery will present their new exhibition, “3AM,” by iron and steel sculptor Bert Gilbert starting this Friday at their Fountain Square Mall location at 101 W Kirkwood Ave.

There will be an opening reception and gallery walk from 5 to 8 p.m. on May 6. The exhibition will be open and free to the public from May 6 to 26.

“3AM” will feature new cast iron and mixed media sculptures by Gilbert. Gilbert builds his work on the cast iron elements he produces during his annual artist residency at Sculpture Trails Iron Casting in Solsberry, Indiana, according to the press release.

For his mixed media works, Gilbert uses casts of recycled iron, scrap metal and salvaged steel over welded parts and repurposed building materials.

In addition to only forming the models and creating the moulds, Gilbert actively participates in

the sculpture’s casting process, according to the press release.

“In my recent pieces, I’ve poured in more and more (plastic) packaging material,” Gilbert said. “This detritus of our online consumer culture, with its soft and corpulent forms, seems an apt metaphor for the empty opulence of consumerism and surely a pointer to future archaeologists defining our culture.”

By Hand Gallery is a locally owned cooperative gallery made up of 13 member artisans, according to their website. By Hand Gallery has been in the Bloomington community for over 40 years and sells well-designed, well-crafted art, according to their website.

The By Hand gallery is open Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
